Large, evergreen trees. Inflorescence cauliflorus and also from main branches, enclosed by glabrous, deciduous, leafy scales. Male flowers in heads. Perianth 2-lobed. Female protruding. Syncarps oblong-globose, periath, thick, fleshy. Seeds elliptic-oblong.

Cultivated for its fruits. Thick, fleshy perianth edible.
