Robust, tall arborescent herbs. Leaves distichous, closely setting, ovate-oblong, spreading. Flowers sessile, subzygomorphic, in compact monochasial cymes, each flower enclosed in a bract. Stamens 6. Capsules linear-oblong.

Native of Madagascar, commonly cultivated in gardens. Fruit setting very rare.
